These rules are intended to put the focus on a surfers skill, control, and style, while riding a wave. The rules are also deigned to encourage wave judgment. The rules are intended to return the focus of surfing to fun and quality not aggression and quantity. The rules are: 1. A surfer is eligible to ride a maximum of five waves. The ride begins when the surfer's hands leave the rail of the surfboard. Surfers will be scored on their best three waves. 2. Rides are scored on a scale of 0-10. Scores would reflect the length of ride, skill, and style. The following maneuvers are score able: turns, cutbacks, board trim, coasters, floaters, sideslips, stalls, tube rides, soup/whitewater control. Unscoreable tricks include: spinners coffins, head stands, etc. 3. Right-of-way on the Wave: if two contestants stand up at the same time, the person farthest back has possession of the wave. If the surfer takes off behind a person already standing, they will be declared a "drop-in" and the ride will be scored a "0" and be counted. Splitting peaks is OK as long as one goes left and one goes right. 4. Surfing Interference: If you are called for interference, you will receive a "0" and that wave will be one of your scoring waves. If you feel you have interfered, or have been interfered with, listen for a call from the P.A.. If you have been interfered with, you will be allowed an additional wave. 5. Leashes are optional. 6. Surfers are to exit the water upon completion of their five waves or when your heat is over. Wave count is your responsibility. 7. If a contestant drops into a wave before their heat starts or after their heat ends, the wave counts has one of three waves and scored as a "0". Contest Director will resolve wave disputes. 8. Sportsmanship: All participants in the contests must adhere to good sportsmanship throughout the event. Any individual who argues with a judge's decision, uses profanity, fights, is overly aggressive to the point where judges think that it is not in the best interest of the conflict, that individual will be disqualified. THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. Novice Eligibility: The Novice Division is a way for newcomers to participate in Surf Fest. We strive to have an event where the competition is part of the fun and not the primary reason to participate. No one may surf more than 2 years in the Novice Division of this contest. If you have the ability to walk the nose, do drop-knee turns, multiple cutbacks, or if your abilities are greater than turning and trimming your board, you are not a novice. If the judges do not believe you belong in the Novice Division, they will not give you a score. HAVE
